Reid Memorial Church, Blackford,Edinburgh

A majestic looking church pointing to heaven.

Edinburgh allotments

Seen from Blackford Hill.

Edinburgh sunrise

And a freezing one at that!

Edinburgh

A very cold pre-dawn over Edinburgh. The two chimneys are Cockenzie Power Station - seen in a very early post.

No. 10, Edinburgh

A knotty carving surrouding No. 10. The hanging basket is neat.

Edinburgh skyline

A favourite view! Not many cities have such a dramatic skyline with a great set of crags (Salisbury Crags) in the background. Not to mention another hill (Blackford Hill) just minutes from work for the photographer to climb to get this great view!

Clouds over the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh

Another quick lunchtime jaunt with the camera.

Skirling Kirk, Scottish Borders

Skirling Kirk with a dramatic winter sky. Unlike yesterday when the sun peeked out for 30 seconds... just long enough to get the photo of the sun drenched(!) Traquair House there was no sign at all of the sun.

Near West Linton, Scottish Borders

Atmosperic weather continues!

Auchencorth Moss, Midlothian

Stopping off on the local moor just before dusk. Cold, wet and windy no glorious sunset but dynamic clouds!

Near Peebles, Scottish Borders

Wild weather!

Traquair House, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders

A whotsit on an excellent slate roof.

Traquair House Gardens, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders

Winter woodland walk. Very ancient Yew trees.

Traquair House, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders

The low building on the left contains a chapel with a brew house underneath at the back. It was a dismal day and the the sun was out only for about 30 seconds! Fortunately I was in the right place at the right time and I rushed around getting a few different pics. Mind I had to wait some time and the car got stuck in the mud wheels spinning - had to be pushed out! A great effort to get you a couple of pics today! As least we have deep winter to look forward to!

Traquair House, Innerleithen, Scottish Borders

This time of year we have a lot of weather! This afternoon Traquair House stood magnificently in the sun with storm clouds behind. Traquair House is the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland it dates back to 1107 - yes, that makes it its 900 anniversary!

As the sun sets

Just managed to catch this on the way home from work today.

Rooftop view - Edinburgh

Everything is in this picture - Edinburgh's stone built heritage and columnar basalt cliffs in the background - just like the Giant's Causeway!

Edinburgh - patterns

Much of Edinburgh is built of stone and slate.

Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh

Still frosty at lunchtime!

Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh at dawn

Very subtle light.

Edinburgh sunrise

You may be wondering why no posts during the last two days... well it has been very dreich - RAIN all the time! This morning was different - it was a VERY cold sunrise!

Ornate gateposts, Edinburgh

Just walking round at lunchtime...

Auchencorth Moss in the rain

Why does the weather always look better in a photograph that it actually was on the moor?

Sunday, 18 November 2007

Tree in the wilderness

A last gasp small hint of pinkness in the sky before the sun set on an otherwise dreich and very short day. At least we got a few of the lichens that thrive on every fence post top on the moor when the weather is like this!

Lichen on fence post, Auchencorth Moss

OK, definitely the last lichen today!

Lichen, Auchencorth Moss

OK... just one more!

Lichens, Auchencorth Moss

It was difficult to pass each fence post!

Life on a gatepost, Auchencorth Moss

Even on the dreariest of days there are masterpieces of nature to be captured. A gatepost on Auchencorth Moss.

Lichens on the moor

Overcast and wet it may be - but our lichens thrive and come to life in these conditions!

Imagination

Today proved to be wet and overcast. Let the imagination see the rolling Pentland Hills behind the tree!

Beech skyline

This can be a great place to see buzzards. I've seen up to eight slowly wheeling around over the trees, today nil but with imagination you can see them!

Stolen shot

To brighten up the days pics on what was a grey day, I crept up to this Christmas cactus and stole a shot before the owner found me!

Pot plants

I wanted to rearrange the plants and move the hose reel... but decided better not!

Timepiece in detail

Precise carving gives a precise time... oops, I'm late!

Timepiece

Going for a walk at lunchtime its great to have the occasional wall mounted clock to check the time.

Sunrise on the way to work, Penicuik, Midlothian

Not usually up early enough to capture such fiery skies... I wonder whether it is like this EVERY morning?!

Pre-dawn excursion

It was good to stop on the way to work and get this very dreamy sky.

End of another day, Mendick Hill near West Linton

What better way to finish the day than with a great Scottish sunset!

Late in the day at West Linton

Thirteen minutes past four and it is getting dark. Days are not very long up here!

Walston Cemetery, Lanarkshire

What a superb sky!

Central Scotland scenery

Just north of Biggar, not quite like the Highlands but only a few minutes from home.

Old landslide near Dunsyre, Lanarkshire

The low angle of the sun picks out an old landslide. Can you see the gap at the top where the rockfall started?

Green leaves on the way home

A rarity this time of year. A welcome break from pictures of sandstone

Vines in Penicuik?

Hand carved vines on top of a pillar.

Chimney pots in Penicuik

... and no aerials!

Lazy Sunday in Penicuik

Park End, Penicuik, didn't have to go too far - this interesting building is close by. It was quite stormy last night and this morning a mix of sun and strong cloud and the ability to walk a few hundred yards up the road got this one...!

Saturday, 10 November 2007

Moors between Lauder and Stow, Scottish Borders

The Scottish Borders are quite often atmospheric!

Moors between Lauder and Stow, Scottish Borders

Making our way home it was dark and subdued.

Lauder, Scottish Borders

Very old door... I wonder how many have passed through this portal.

Flat Cat Gallery, Lauder, Scottish Borders

This eye-catching shop sign caught the photographer's eye... good eh!

Woodpecker in the garden

Wondering where to go to take an image for the blog today.. there suddenly appeared a Great Spotted Woodpecker in the garden! Within seconds I grabbed my camera and... it didn't work - no card in the camera - typical! He stayed around long enough to get this not too sharp picture.

Friday, 9 November 2007

What a skyline!

Just one more because it was really good. I promise not to put up the other twenty I took!

End of day in North Berwick

Couldn't really go without a good Scottish sunset!

Scottish riviera?

Maybe not. It was windy and freezing as is usual in this part of the world. North Berwick is great for photography though - if you like sea and sky!

Ruffled feathers at North Berwick

One of the locals showing proof that North Berwick is windy.

North Berwick breaker

You should have seen the ones that got away....!

Breaker contre-jour

Maybe this is a bit better... and with a bit of French - impressive eh!

Breakers at Bass Rock

OK, so the rest of the east coast is having great breakers the size of houses, all I managed was a little bit of swell. But they don't have Bass Rock! Some of you may enquire why is Bass Rock there? Well, it just happens to be the plug of a volcano that was active 340 million years ago. For a far more interesting story follow this link and be amazed!

Scotland is full of castles

Tantallon Castle between Tyninghame and North Berwick is looking majestic - apart from the scaffolding. I was very tempted to Photoshop them but resisted. Great contrast though with the dark clouds behind - my sort of picture!

Why does the sun always shine at Tyninghame?

Dunno, but it always does when I pass though - you can see from the dark cloudy background that it doesn't shine anywhere else!

Pot plant

I should have been photographing gravestones in Prestonkirk Kirk but I saw this pot plant - just a bit out of context - nice pot plant though. Don't know what it is - plants are a bit out of my context too!

Penicuik Town Hall, Midlothian

I was out shopping... and took my camera with me .. just in case....!

Crumbling bird

I think this is a dove....

Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, Scottish Borders

The sun finally sets on the day.

Lilliesleaf Church, Roxburghshire, Scottish Borders

Silhouette as the sun sets.

Storm beyond Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, Scottish Borders

Fortunately the stormy weather was away over the fields.

Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, Scottish Borders

Stormy weather on the way!

Eildon Hills, Scottish Borders

Leaving Bowden and looking back to the Eildon Hills, the foreground and hills were lit up against the gathering storm clouds - this was it for the day now.

Bowden Church, Roxburghshire - main gate

OK, I can't resist a good silhouette either! First signs of cloud appearing.

Stained glass window, Bowden Church, Roxburghshire

Stained glass just aks to be photographed - I couldn't resist this one. It is part of a much larger window amongst a number of other impressive stained-glass windows in this Borders' kirk.

Autumnal beech leaves

Against a great blue sky.

Tweed Valley

Tweed Valley was also looking sparkling.

Storm? What storm?

Despite the severe weather warning, this morning started out fine in the local Penicuik woods, Lowrie's Den.

Wednesday, 7 November 2007

Auchencorth Moss

The cloud seems to stream over the line of the Moorfoot Hills in the distance. So that's it for the day! I wonder what tomorrow will bring... we could be storm chasing, reading the weather forecast!

Auchencorth Moss

Back to a local haunt this evening - bright pink contrails as the sun sets.

Cockenzie Power Station

Looking the other way from the nicey nicey seascapes is an even finer view... a huge exciting coal-fired power station glowing in the late afternoon sun!

Prestonpans, East Lothian

Another view as the sun gets low.
A local legend suggests that Prestonpans was first founded by a shipwrecked pirate called Althamer in the 11th Century. Prestonpans is of course famous for the Jacobite victory over the English in 1745.

Prestonpans, East Lothian

Further east along the coast is Prestonpans. Looking over the sea towards Edinburgh, the large mass of Arthur's Seat is clearly visible.

Portobello, Edinburgh

A sparkling wall of sandstone buildings on Portobello sea front.

The name, 'Portobello' is derived from 'Puerto Bello', a port captured during Admiral Vernon's campaign against the Spaniards in 1739. A retired sailor, George Hamilton called his house after Puerto Bello and the name seemed to stick!

Joppa, Edinburgh

Sunshine, completely empty beach and Wimpy chips... great!

Edinburgh sky

Edinburgh is full of wonderful stone buildings and often great skies - today we had both.

Chimney pots against an Edinburgh sky

Another image 'worked' in Photoshop to get an image more true to life. Neat pipework.

The Reid Memorial Church

Nice picture but I cheated. Taken into the light exposing for the sky it vastly underexposed the building. I created two images from the RAW file one with exposure optimized for the building and one for the sky and then superimposed them to get an image of what it actually looked like. Art eh!

Five to one

Better get back to work...

Grasses

Grasses in the garden at the Reid Memorial Church, Edinburgh. The sun streamed through against the background shadow making them jump out at me!

Grand entrance. Shot through the railings!

The Reid Memorial Church, Edinburgh

Managed to get this without ANY traffic lights, lamp-posts and other assorted street furniture - it was difficult!

Edinburgh Castle from Blackford Hill

It was a cracker of a day and a lunchtime walk up Blackford Hill saw a really great view of Edinburgh Castle and the hills of Fife behind. The black basalts of the volcanic plug that the castle sits on are clearly visible. After the serious exercise and the strong wind I was surprised this picture was sharp!

Yellows...

On the way to Blackford Hill there were some great autumnal trees!

Pinks

The leaves are now on the turn another week and they will be all gone!

Reds

The mornings are dark, the evenings are dark but at lunchtime there is great light!

OK, it was a nice car - so one last picture.

Something different - a very old car but in excellent condition. You go out photographing gravestones and you come back with an old car!
