Sunset New Year's Eve. Pentland Hills.

Last picture of 2007. Doesn't look too bad even though it was raining! While standing there, great masses of seagulls swept overhead at speed with a whoosh of their combined wing beats. There must have been 1000's roosting on the water. They were followed by masses of talkative geese! If you want to know what conditions were like nearby exactly one year ago here is the link: http://www.scotfot.smugmug.com/gallery/2306100/1/120552490/Large It was stormy, not like the tranquil scene you see here!

Finally... at Cockenzie Power Station

3.48 pm and the sun sets over Prestonpans. Wandering over for another day!

From Cockenzie Power Station

Hmm... intrigued as to what was going on behind the power station... tootled round to find this...!

Cockenzie Harbour

Which way to turn... a wandering photographer's dilemma... great storm over North Berwick or sun setting over great power station... went for the romantic option!

Storm over North Berwick

Almost forgetting to look the other way from the setting sun... but glad I did... there seemed to be a terrific storm going on over there!

Yesterday was grey, wet and generally poor for wandering photographers. This morning was very overcast... at 2pm ah... a chink of light! Grab camera, battery and card and off we went! With only 1.5 hours of the new found daylight left we ended up at my favourite power station! Great sky too!

Big Softie!

Highland Cattle... big softies

Curious of the photographer!

Highland Cattle Bull

This fearsome beast has photographers for breakfast! He is probably a big softie... but I didn't hang around to find out!

Just near a village called Wall. A view of a frosty farm, looking north/north east towards Scotland

Early morning in the Scottish Border hills

... and then the sunrise was gone! A bit of yesterday's snow still clings to the distant tops. The weather soon closed in and it rained on the way back.

OK, today was not too hot for taking photos and while editing an earlier set of photos I came across this bit of colour found in Restalrig kirkyard.

Towers and spires Edinburgh ...part 2

A stubby tower on the Edinburgh skyline. Ok, back to work... fun over!

Slate roofing tiles from the spire

Think of the work involve to get here... digging the slate - shaping each by hand and then the skill of tiling such a steep steeple - all for what would have been a domestic property.

Spires and towers of Edinburgh ...part 2

Another lunchtime spire... what a cracker! Notice the chimney built into the spire.

Flatland of Edinburgh

If you can't afford a turret or tower then maybe a traditional stone flat would suit.

Turrets and towers of Edinburgh

Magnificently crafted turret.... and tree!

Towers in Edinburgh

Walking around with a camera you seem to see a lot more than when walking round without one. This superbly crafted tower crowns one of Edinburgh's mini-grand buildings.

Rooftops in Edinburgh

This is not a lesson in symmetry.

Can't beat yesterday's pictures but here are a few from a lunchtime walk from work.

Cockenzie Power Station

OK, this is the last for today. I hope you have enjoyed today's sequence!

Cockenzie Power Station

Well, it was definitely worth staying a few extra minutes to get this great shot of the power station. (0.4 sec hand held - VR rules!)

Forth Estuary from Cockenzie

Another colourful view. The pier is for the power station.

Forth Estuary, Cockenzie

Superb sky... maybe I'll hang around just a bit longer!

Forth Estuary

OK, we were going home... but maybe just one more pic! Forth Rail Bridge can be seen in the distance.

Cockenzie Power Station

It was getting dark and the lights inside the power station were starting to glow strongly. Still steaming as well.

Wall, Port Seton

Interesting wall with a layer of clinker running through it! Stone walls are great!

Port Seton birds

Walking back up the High Street we saw these spuggies (sparrows) sheltering in a bush. Every time someone approached them they dived deep into the tangle of branches.

Port Seton Harbour

Last shot of the harbour before going home.

I like this one... it has a great sea and sky AND a great power station!

What harbour would be without a big anchor. What a great perch for a tired Joe Crow.

Port Seton Harbour

A tranquil harbour scene... but freezing!!

Port Seton Harbour

Two small fishing boats at rest. Orange and blue. Beautiful reflections.

Port Seton Harbour

Everything perfect... sea and sky!

Port Seton Zen Garden?

A natural Zen Garden. Rocks and sand, the sea is symbolized by natural rippled sand... something like that!

Port Seton

A small inlet with a great sky.

Cockenzie Power Station

By the time we had walked down the coast a bit and looked round a big hole had formed in the grey day giving a powerful picture to go with the powerful power station! Things are looking up!

Young gull

This fella sitting on his favourite perch was not too impressed with the power station - or the photographer - just gimme food!

Port Seton

A small fishing boat in harbour.

Cockenzie Power Station

Steam oozing out all over the place! This is a BIG building.

Cockenzie Power Station

Coal-fired and on the Firth of Forth. It looks great but it was a bit grey today. Now we know where the clinker in the wall probably came from!

Stone and clinker wall, Port Seton

We headed for the Scottish Borders... but it looked VERY overcast. A quick U-turn saw us heading in the opposite direction, no specific destination but ended up in Port Seton. This is where we parked. This was beginning to look interesting. A good stone wall, well half stone and the top clinker - very unusual!

View from Castlelaw Hill Fort, northern Pentland Hills

Sunday, up for the dawn and into the hills but nothing much happened! Went for a walk for an hour and a half over the tops and decided it was time for breakfast. Only two photos were taken... perhaps it was something to do with the cold!

Saturday, 1 December 2007

Beech avenue, near Leadburn

A few last and weak rays of sun strained through a bare beech avenue, near Leadburn. Not sure if this is in Midlothian or the Borders Region!

Moss

Another clump of wall bound moss!

Moss

Stone walls abound in this area. This one had a cave of sparkling moss set in a recess.

West Linton area, Scottish Borders

The light can change dramatically often within minutes in this area. The grey skies contrast with the earlier sunny pictures taken just a short while before this one.

Auchencorth Moss, Midlothian

This weatherbeaten tree on the open moor is a great favourite. You can tell which ways the wind blows around here. Today it is graced by a crow!

Auchencorth Moss, Midlothian

The sun came out for a very short while this afternoon. Good to see it after a few days of rain. Pentland Hills in the background.
